Sample: Certified Food Service Professional Exam and Preparation Course

Goal: Meet Administrator and Learner Needs

The North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers offers a certification for salespeople in the foodservice equipment and supply industry to demonstrate their expertise in advising foodservice companies on the items best suited for their purposes. Although it was a relatively sought-after certification, association staff struggled with inefficiencies in administering the program, for example, the exam was in a paper, short-answer, hand-graded format. Additionally, beyond reading the textbook, the only other study aid was a 1-day, eight-hour in-person lecture.

Task: Translate Text Into Activities

My task became to transform the exam into a computer-gradeable format that still contained appropriately challenging test items. Additionally, I was to develop an asynchronous form of exam preparation that exam takers from anywhere could access to help them practice the concepts in the textbook.

Action: Storyboarding and Collaboration

After considering the topics of the questions in the final exam, I created storyboards for eLearning activities based around the most important topics in the exam that would prepare exam takers for the types of questions they would see. I then reviewed the storyboards with a Subject Matter Expert to confirm the soundness of the topics and questions. Finally, I collaborated with an eLearning design colleague to create the final products.

Result: An Enduring Course and Exam

Although I created this course early in my career as an instructional designer, this exam preparation course and exam have been in continual use since 2019 with over 540 learners enrolled in the exam preparation course, over 1,000 learners enrolled in the exam, and over 550 users successfully completing the exam.
